Introduction:
An Article is word used to modify a noun, which is a person, place object or idea, Technically, an article is an adjective, which is any word that modifies a noun, usually adjectives modify nouns through description, but articles are used instead to point out or refer to nouns.
There are only three articles, the, a and an, they are very small words which cause very large problems if used incorrectly.
Article “A”
“A” is used for singular countable nouns or objectives, it is placed before a singular countable noun ‘or’ adjective that begins with a consonant sound.
‘Consonants’ are letters which are other than “a,e,I,o,u”
For example:
- A cat.
- A stamp
- A des
- A TV
- That is a chair.
- She is a girl. etc.
Article “An”
“An” is also used for singular countable nouns or adjectives, “An” is placed before a singular contable noun or adjective that begins with a vowel sound.
‘Vowels’ are “a,e,I,o,u”
For example:
- I eat an apple.
- An orange
- An elephant
- An issue.
- An orange.
- That is an aeroplane
- That is an elephant. etc.
Article “The”
“The” can be used for singular and plural, countable or uncountable nouns, we use “The” when we are referring to a particular or specific noun.
For example:
- Please close the door.
- I like the clothes you gave me.
- I was very native in the past.
- This song was very popular in the 1980s. etc.
